JEFFREYS Family tree
I was recently contacted by a relative and asked about their connection with Stephen Jeffreys, as a result I have produced a basic history of Stephen, George and the rest of the family tree. I will add to it as I discover more information!
Stephen Jeffreys
was one of nine children born to Thomas and Kezia Jeffreys.
Thomas was a coal miner who suffered from asthma and died in1895of lung disease at the age of 47. Kezia died at the age of seventy-seven.
Stephen Jeffreys was born on 2nd September 1876 at Nantyffyllon,
Maesteg, in the South of Wales. He the third (some say forth) child of a large family of twelve children.
On Boxing Day, in the year 1898, Stephen was married to Elizabeth Anne Lewis, a farmer's daughter of Ynys-y-bwl at Bridgend. They were both twenty-three.
Edward Jeffrey who was born on 6 October 1899 in Maesteg, South Wales, the only son among four children born to Stephen and Elizabeth Jeffreys. Stephen was a miner.
Edward married Evelyn Arnold from Neath in South Wales In 1921, they settled, firstly in Llanelli and then in London. They had two children, Arnold and Irona.
Edward and Eveline retired to Bournemouth in 1965 and Edward died on 6th November 1974. Eveline died in May 1997 when 97 years of age. Their son Arnold who was Secretary of the University of Lancaster until 1981 and died 3 years later, aged 61 years, and their daughter Irona retired in Bath.
Stephen and Elizabeth’s daughters were called, May, Gladys, and Lilian. (The last-named died at the age of six months).
Stephen had a brother William, who passed to his Eternal Home on 4th November 1945.
Stephen passed into the presence of the King! On Wednesday November 17th 1943.
Stephen had a younger brother George Jeffreys who was the sixth of nine children born February 28, 1889 and was named after an older brother who had died in early childhood. George was called to be with Christ January 26th 1962 aged 72.
WILLIAM AND EDWARD JEFFREYS
Edward Jeffreys was by no means a full-time preacher from his youth, however, serving in the 1914-18 war first in the RFC and then as a prison camp attendant in France. He later had a variety of jobs, at some time becoming an FRGS. In 1921 he married Evelyn Arnold from Neath in South Wales, and they settled, firstly in Llanelli and then in London. They had 2 children, Arnold and Irona. During the 1920’s

The following is mainly about Edward Jeffreys, as you will see there is one mention of William. But I hope it will help to give some family back ground.
Pastor Edward Jeffreys a short history.
Pastor Edward Jeffreys was born in 1899 in the Welsh mining valleys the only son of the 'Beloved Evangelist' Pastor Stephen Jeffreys. At a young age while on a visit to Crosshands, Edward was filled with the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues. It was through his experience that his father and uncle, Stephen and George finally came to acknowledge this scriptural sign of baptism and they also received. He was baptised in water at the same time as his father and uncle. God's hand would rest upon this family mightily. His early years were spent watching his father's powerful ministry raise up a church in Llanlli and move the whole community. As he grew he would travel with his father often leading the singing, seeing multitudes converted and sick bodies healed in the great revival campaigns of the 20s. All this was a moulding influence in preparing him for God's call. By 1928 Edward was married and was in charge of a church at Southend-on-Sea in Essex England.
He had encouraged his father to open a door of opportunity for a friend of his to enter the ministry. And so Stephen while pioneering a work in Bristol (City of George Muller) had informed the people that Edward's friend Mr. Heard would Pastor the work. When Edward first arrived at the meetings with his friend they could hardly get into the 3000 seater, it was packed to overflowing. Over the previous twenty days over 1500 and stood in response to the gospel call. The presence of God was strong, sick bodies were being healed. The young man was awed and overcome, he turned to Edward and said "Brother I can't take this work on; it's far too big." When he informed his father, he said "Well, Eddie you must come here for three weeks until I can find a suitable man." As he arrived to start his own ministry that first night it was in great weakness, his knees literally trembled. His text was 'When they came to a place called Calvary, there they crucified Him.' To his great amazement 250 stood in response to receive Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Soon they had purchased their own building called the ' Bethel Temple '. The congregation on a Sunday morning was at 500 and much more in the evening. These were days of heaven on earth for him, God was preparing him for a similar ministry as that of his father and uncle. In 1929 he used Bristol as a base to start going forth to hold missions and plant churches in other places either in a tent or some building.
He spent 26 weeks of 1930 holding evangelistic healing campaigns across the country, tens of thousands came to meetings, the lost were saved and the sick healed. By this time the Bethel Evangelistic Society was made up of some 60 churches, mostly raised up out of the campaigns. Sadly by 1932 cracks began to show. First, there was unease about his 'leadership style, doctrine and perceived lack of financial accountability,' this led to the total advisory board of Bethel resigning and 12 of the churches leaving the association. Then in 1933 by way of preaching and writing Edward took a strong stand against believing in a separate experience of the baptism in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. He felt some were living in carnality though speaking in tongues. He taught instead a Spirit lived life lived in godliness. All this distanced his work from the Pentecostal movement; as a result many others left Bethel for Elim or AoG.
Even so it was in 1934 that Edward reached the height of his evangelistic labours in Liverpool. In May he set up a tent in the Bootle area, they sought no help locally, had little financial help; they distributed a few leaflets and put a couple of small ads in papers. Suddenly the heavens opened and the Spirit of God moved. In each of the first three evenings blind eyes were opened. After two weeks 4000 people were gathering and every manner of disease, illness and injury was healed by the Masters hand. The numbers rose to 6000 then 8000. At one meeting over 700 responded to the Gospel, very often hundreds responded and on one particular day 3000 responded, with 10,000 in attendance. This tent was described as the biggest in the country. After 13 weeks there was still about 7000 people gathering every night. After 17 weeks 3-6000 were gathering every night. Churches were planted to carry on the work. In 1939 Principle George Jeffreys his uncle, (founder of the Elim Church), formed The Bible Pattern Church Fellowship, he persuaded his brothers Stephen and William to join him and finally Edward. For a few short years these greatly used family members laboured together. After the War Edward sold his church building in Southport to Elim, printed his father's testimony and parted company with George. As yet, it is not clear why!
With the Pentecostal Movement and years of Evangelistic Campaigning behind him he decided to join the Anglican ministry. In 1948 he was appointed minister of a church in North East London, and then in 1953 he was appointed minister at another church a few miles away. His ministry as an Evangelist came into play once more and when he retired 12 years later he left a thriving church and work. In 1965 he moved to Bournemouth and died there in 1974.

I also remember my Grandmother Sylvia Thomas talking about William. I believe that he had a very good sense of humour and fun and was quite good with his hands. William visited my grandparents whilst they lived in London and did some odd jobs for them. This was a great help as my grandfather at the time was busy with the pastorate of the Bible Pattern Church Barking Essex. I think William had travelled up from south Wales for the visit.
There is information about Stephen Jeffreys in a book by
Norman Grubb called 'Rees Howells, Intercessor'
Were you aware that there are two biographies about Pastor Stephen Jeffreys which can be downloaded via my website homepage for a few pounds. (See lower part of webpage to find links). When I get time I will have a read of them myself and see if any information is there.

I feel the need to pay a debt of Gratitude to The Bible Pattern Church.
I was recently informed of members of my Church coming into contact with the Bible Pattern Church in Blackpool. I carried out a search on the internet and was pleased to find that they had a website which I greatly enjoyed reading. It was encouraging to be able to see the times of the services and the activities taking place, it was good to know that I would be able to contact them by phone or email.
I then wrote an email to the Pastor hoping to encourage him and at the same time found myself asking about other similar Bible Pattern Churches. Sadly after searching for other Bible Pattern Churches I found that unlike the Blackpool Church some of the existing Churches did not have a website and therefore might not be able to reach as many people with the Good news of Gospel not to mention the Fellowship which other similar Churches might be able to have if they were able to be in a closer awareness of each other and being able to encourage, pray and have fellowship with each other.
The next Morning I awoke with a strong conviction to do something about the matter, I started by looking for the Grafton Square Church in Clapham London. A few years ago I had travelled up to London on Business and found my afternoon free which I used to search out the grave of my Great Great Uncle George Jeffreys and Pastor R. E. Darragh. I then made my way to find the Clapham Church, I was thrilled to see that services were taking place and only wished a mid week service had been taking place that day to be able to meet and encourage the Pastor and members. After my return to Bournemouth I was able to contact the Pastor on the telephone who very kindly sent me some of their magazines.
You can imagine my horror and great upset to find on the internet the church had been converted into flats! I told the Lord that I wish I had been able to do something for those dear brothers and sister in Christ to avoid this happening. My Heavenly Father knows I would have done whatever he called me to do.
You will now see that I have set up an additional website to this one called The Bible Pattern Church
http://thebible-patternchurch.blogspot.com/
(LOOK OUT FOR THE BLUE PATTERN BANNER ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE TO BE ABLE TO CLICK ON THE PICTURE FOR A LINK TO THE OTHER WEBSITE)
which I pray will be a Blessing and help to the existing Churches. A part of me wishes I could go around all of all of these Churches to encourage them and set up a website of their own. But for now I must obey the calling I have to serve the Lord as an Evangelist working with a faithful band of Fellow Members of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Belfast and in a small way follow in the footsteps of Principle George Jefferies who founded the First Elim Church in the same city.
I trust you will find the additional website interesting and a Blessing to my Brothers and Sisters in the Bible Pattern Churches around the UK.
There is a lot more of the story to share with you involving my parents, grandparents, Great Uncle and many Brothers and sister in the Lord. Maybe it will be possible to do this on the Additional Website.

George Jeffreys' Crusades in Liverpool 1926 part 3
The Everton Crusade
Used with the kind permission of
www.liverpoolrevival.org.uk
With grateful thanks.
Liverpool was very much blessed by having a return visit of George Jeffreys in July 1926. This time a large tent was erected in Lower Breck Road in Everton. It was not long before the tent was packed with crowds of people unable to gain admittance and it was therefore necessary for the sides of the tent to be lifted to enable those outside to take part in the service. The people of the neighbourhood were drawn by the enthusiastic singing of the congregation and many passers-by stopped to listen to the burst of praise coming from the tent. The following photos gives an idea of how well attended the meetings where.
The crusade commenced on Wednesday 14th July 1926 and was scheduled to last for a week. At one of the first meetings there was a time of testimony at which many people told of how they were healed and blessed during the previous crusade. On the Friday 16th July the Liverpool Post and Mercury carried the following report:
"Considerable enthusiasm prevails in the neighbourhood of Lower Breck Road, where Pastor Jeffreys is conducting a revival and healing campaign, which commenced on Wednesday, and is to continue for seven days. The tent in which the meetings are held has a seating capacity for something like 1,000, and is fully occupied, while hundreds unable to get in take part in the singing and can both see and hear the speaker. Invalids in bathchairs are placed where they can hear what is going on. Speaking yesterday of his own personal experience, Pastor Jeffreys said he was never expected to live when in his teens, but came in touch with the Divine, and had been so ever since. Remarkable scenes were witnessed when several who desired prayer fell prostate the moment Pastor Jeffreys laid his hands upon them. Mrs Matthews, suffering from neuritis and rheumatism, declared she was healed, and Miss Gee said she was cured of swollen feet and ankles. Both were at last night's meeting, and appeared remarkably well. Among those who were healed in the earlier part of the year were Miss Phyllis Law, who had suffered from paralysis, Mrs Parry, and Eva Kidd, aged seven all of who expressed gratitude for restoration to health. Mrs Parry claims that her sight was restored after having to be led about for twelve years."
The following is an account of the crusade meetings taken from the Elim Evangel dated 16th August 1926. It occupied the front page with the heading 'Soul Stirring Scenes of Revival & Healing.'
"Faithful prayer warriors for weeks past had been pulling the bell ropes of Heaven, and when Pastor Jeffreys arrived, faces were upturned in expectation for the answer - and down it came. Everton was hit by a revival of soul saving and healing power. From the first meeting the atmosphere was charged, and one would not have been surprised at anything happening. The large tent was packed each meeting and the sides had to be lowered to let the outside congregation take part in the service. How the people sang. At the close of each meeting hands were raised all over the tent, as well as outside by those who were receiving Jesus as their Saviour. During the meetings people were weeping, laughing, praying and praising God as they witnessed the Lord Jesus destroying the work of the devil. People were being healed of a huge number of ailments including blindness, deafness, double rupture, high blood pressure, diabetes, skin disease, ulcers, bladder trouble, kidney disease, liver trouble, and hip joint disease. The enthusiastic send off on the closing night will never be forgotten. Outside the tent as the Pastor and workers endeavoured and struggled to get to the waiting car, the crowd swayed to and fro like the billows of an ocean and it was a strange scene that was witnessed as the police took control."
It appears that this crusade must have been extended because in the same edition of the Elim Evangel there was a report of a dedication service for another church in Coulsdon at which Pastor Jeffreys was to have been present but it stated that he had been detained 'at the Liverpool revival.'
The church in Windsor Street continued in much blessing after that, with numbers of people being saved and healed; with remarkable testimonies of people being healed of blindness, neuritis, skin disease and a tumour. Thirty-six people were baptised in one meeting the following month and a further 40 people after that. God's blessing continued in that church with a report of 34 people being baptised a year later.
The church building in Windsor Street is no longer there but the Elim movement is today still strong in Merseyside with several churches on both sides of the water.

The Boxing Stadium
Used with the kind permission of
www.liverpoolrevival.org.uk
With grateful thanks.
It was not long before it was realised that the church building was far too small to hold the crowds that were wishing to come to the meetings, with many being unable to gain admittance. A step of faith was, therefore, taken to hire the 5000 seater Boxing Stadium for five days from Wednesday 24th March to Sunday 28th March. This step of faith was amply rewarded, because as can be seen from the above photo taken from one of the services, the Stadium was well filled. The Elim Evangel of 15th April 1926 carried the following report:
"The City of Liverpool has been powerfully moved by the wonderful Revival Campaign at Windsor Street Chapel, and the large Boxing Stadium. Beginning with a comparatively small congregation of a few dozen the numbers grew rapidly to hundreds and then thousands. True revival fervour was in evidence, with hundreds of souls, over 800 in all were saved, with numbers of sick bodies healed."
Both the Daily Despatch and the Daily Post & Mercury, respectively, carried reports of the Boxing Stadium Services, as follows:
"Using the roped enclosure of the Boxing Stadium as his pulpit Pastor George Jeffreys, whose Revival and Healing Campaign has been attracting immense crowds at Liverpool recently, conducted two immense services in the Boxing Stadium yesterday. The evening service was attended by close on 3000 people and the same enthusiasm which marked the services in the small chapel in Windsor Street where many remarkable 'cures' have been claimed was manifested last night. Over 100 men, women and children spoke of their individual 'cures'." (Daily Despatch).
"Last night the campaign closed to the singing of many hymns by a very large congregation, who sometimes waved their hymn papers in the air as they sang, so that the Stadium looked like a place where a distinguished visitor was being greeted by a waving of flags. Those who later came forward to testify that they had benefited from the healing service included:
A man who told the congregation that he had suffered a severe accident at a Merseyside factory, and that he had left hospital with some paralysis of the wrist, finger, and foot. This paralysis he declared had disappeared when Pastor Jeffreys prayed over him and he showed the congregation how supple his affected members had become.
A young boy said that he had a tubercular hip, and had been told by the doctors that he would have to undergo his fifth operation, 'but, thank the Lord, I won't' he called out, for he declared that his hip had benefited from the praying over him, and the people cheered his declaration.
A woman who declared herself cured jumped up and down with joy as she faced the congregation from the ringside.
A girl that had always stammered, repeated a text in a firm voice.
A girl who had suffered from weak eyes declared that she could look into the strong electric light over the boxing-ring.
A man said that he had been completely cured of a disease that the pastor declined to mention by name.
These testimonies were punctuated with cries of 'Allelujah' from the audience." (Daily Post & Mercury).
The departure scene of the Pastor from Liverpool was quite moving and numbers turned out to wish him God-speed. One young man gave his heart to the Lord and many shed tears freely as they said goodbye to the man that, in God's hands had touched a tender chord in their heart, had won them for the Master, had healed their sick bodies and had restored many a backslider to the Lord and had brought happiness into the lives and homes of so many (Elim Evangel 15/4/26).
The effect of this crusade was an enduring one as will be seen from the following report from the Elim Church three months later:
"The work is steadily progressing in Liverpool. Hundreds of those who have been delivered from the chain of darkness are rejoicing in the Lord and drinking in the Word of life. Souls are being added almost daily to this living Church, where instead of darkness and gloom, the True Light now shineth, and the high praises of God are heard. Many burdened ones are still able to find relief to their burdened souls and diseased bodies. Among those who have recently felt the touch of the nail pierced hand, is a little boy who was going to have an operation on his knee. After being prayed for in the Name of Jesus, he needed no operation, and is now able to walk, the splints being removed. Others having rheumatism, heart trouble, growth, etc, have been instantly delivered, are now enjoying liberty in soul and body, having proved the faithfulness of God to His Word. To God be the praise." (Elim Evangel 1/7/26)

George Jeffreys' Crusades in Liverpool 1926 part 1
The first crusade

With grateful thanks.
The crusade commenced on Sunday 14th March 1926 at the newly established Elim church in Windsor Street, Liverpool. Very soon God's blessing began to fall on the services and in the Elim Evangel dated 1st April 1926 it carried the following report:
"Revival Fires are burning in Liverpool. Although the campaign only started on Sunday 14th March, by the middle of the week the church was packed out. Hundreds have been saved and there have been many remarkable healings."
It was not long before the secular press began to report what was happening in these meetings, including the Yorkshire Observer, which referred to "the extraordinary scenes being reported at a disused Liverpool Chapel." The Daily Despatch of 18th March carried the following report:
"Remarkable scenes of religious fervour are being witnessed at the little chapel in Windsor Street. Several remarkable 'cures' have been claimed by sick and maimed people who have been anointed with oil during the campaign. Several of the patients whom the pastor described as being under the power of God, swooned and lay trembling for some moments."
The Daily Despatch went on to list some of the healings that had already taken place including a five year old girl suffering from Infantile Paralysis, a woman healed of deafness, a man from heart disease, and two people from paralysis. On the following day (19th March), five days after the commencement, the Daily Despatch carried the following report:
"Hundreds of people had to be turned away from yesterday's services. Queues began to assemble outside the chapel two hours before the meeting commenced. As soon as the doors were open crowds began to clamour for admission, choking the aisles and every available inch of space. A crowd just as large could not gain admission and had to remain outside, while a few yards along the street other evangelists conducted open-air services until long after ten o'clock. So great was the pressure inside that the pastor was unable to anoint any of the people with oil and the service was terminated prematurely. Nevertheless a number of people testified to healing including a woman who had been dumb for many years, and two women healed of deafness."
In the Elim Evangel dated 1st May 1926 the following report was given of a Children's Healing Service held which I presume from the context must have occurred at Windsor Street:
"'Come to me, darling, it's now time to get ready for the children's diving healing service. Cheer up, my sweetheart. There will be no more sleepless nights, no more will your little body be racked by pain; Jesus is going to hear and answer prayer, and you will return from the meeting healed.' And so from all parts of the great city of Liverpool comes a stream of little children, carried by loving mothers and friends - some wheeled in carriages, some brought in motorcars.
Here they come! Every little child has been told they are coming to Jesus. The hall is packed - pews and aisles. What a sight. Tears begin to flow down the cheeks of those on the platform as they look into the little, pale, sad, upturned faces, but faces full of expectancy."
After singing a well known children's hymn and George Jeffreys had spoken to the children and had given an alter call, it continued:
"The children come and file past. Each one is anointed and prayed for, according to James v 14 and the Lord works. Leg steels and braces are taken off. Glasses are dispensed with. Cries come from the lips of mothers, 'Oh, my little girl can walk' - 'Darling, can you really see?' - 'My precious one, you can hear me speak for the first time' - 'Oh, this is wonderful'. And so the place resounds with shouts of joy, hands are clapped with delight. Hallelujahs come from hearts and lips. Surely the scriptures are being enacted again - 'And they brought young children to Him that He should touch them' - and, bless Him He did'. "

Healings and miracles occurred in the British Isles during the ministry of George and Stephen Jeffreys
Healings and miracles occurred in the British Isles during the ministry of George and Stephen Jeffreys
From Wales God raised up two brothers who have been wonderfully used of God in the Pentecostal work in the British Isles.
George Jeffreys, the younger of the two while yet in his teens, began preaching the full gospel. God gave him some very gracious revivals in Ireland. people in Ireland, who remembered the revival in 1859, when God’s power was so mightily manifested, were delighted to see revival of like nature. The first meeting hall was established in Belfast, Ireland, with a seating capacity of 300. Today in the same city there are two large tabernacles (The uster Temple Elim and the Metropolitan Tabernacle, who's pastor preached in Bible pattern Churches as a young man).George Jeffreys Great Great Nephew still holds an evangelistic outreach in the centre of Belfast.
Reared in an earnest Christian home, George Jeffreys never knew a time when he did not love Jesus, but he can definitely fix the date of his new birth. Not many years after he started a business career as a lad, he abandoned it for the more serious business of proclaiming the gospel to perishing souls. Before he left business one side of his face was struck with paralysis, and for a time he partially lost the power of speech. Ever since 1911, when he was completely healed, he has publicly preached Divine Healing in the atonement, and has been markedly used of the Lord in healing of the sick. The campaigns held by George Jeffreys have packed some of the largest halls in the British Isles, including the historic hall of St. Andrews, Glasgow, with its seating capacity of 4,500; the Guild Hall of Plymouth, which accommodates nearly 4,000; the Military Riding School of Carlside, which holds 4,000; and the Royal Albert Hall of London, which accommodates 10,000. Each Easter three meetings have been held in this great hall and at each meeting the building has been filled to capacity. One Easter 1,000 were baptized in water. At a testimony service given at Albert Hall at Easter, 1933, to quote the account given in the Daily Express: ‘Of those who testified there were 72 guaranteed cures of cancer and malignant growths; 20 had been crippled; 17 had been blind; 70 had been afflicted with stiff muscles or useless limbs; and 18 had been deaf’.
Over 1,200 were swept into the kingdom in one campaign held in Brighton, and 300 gave testimony to the Lord’s healing power. One who attended this meeting writes: ‘Hundreds of people have testified in the meeting to having been healed. People who only a few weeks ago were bedridden, or wheeled about in chairs, are today walking and praising God for His kindness in healing them. Lame ones, who moved only by the aid of crutches, are able to dispense with these. Deaf ones have been made to hear, blind ones to see, fourteen testified to having been cured of cancer, tuberculosis, or tumor’.
Mr. Percy G. Parker wrote of a revival campaign held by George Jeffreys at Portsmouth: ‘Hundreds testified to healing, two at least had been wheeled into the meetings a few days before. One for fifteen years and the other for twenty years had been wheeled about helpless, but lo! they walked before us healed! The useless leg of one had faded to a skeleton. Not only was she instantly healed but her flesh returned as fresh and full as the other. A little girlie of about three years of age had been healed of paralysis of both arms. She held them up before us. Another had been blind in her right eye for many years. Now she sees! Growths, dislocations, deafness, rupture, even sugar diabetes have all disappeared before the touch of the Master.
We are living in the days of the acts of the Holy Ghost – thank God for it! Our eyes are seeing what hundreds of thousands of the redeemed ones have been groaning for. At this last meeting no less than 130 people signified their acceptance of Christ’.
The following is a newspaper clipping from the Bournemouth Times and Directory, by a special reporter, Marion Holmes: ‘If I had gone to the big tent – where Principal George Jeffreys has been holding revival and healing meetings – to scoff, I should certainly have remained to pray. But I did not go to scoff, I went to see if the wonderful cures of which I had heard were really taking place, and to decide – if I could – whether they were due, as some said, to hysterical excitement, or to something much greater and more permanent in its effects. I went, I saw, and I was conquered …. The gift of sight to a boy, who – so I was told – was born blind, was conferred at the same meeting; and I was given the particulars of the healing of a severe and long-standing case of spinal trouble by the grateful patient himself. Cases of cancer, goiter, rheumatism, nerve trouble, curvature of the spine, hereditary deafness, asthma, and numerous others have been cured at other meetings’.
The following incident is one of the after-effects of the revival meeting held at Bournemouth. It is taken from the Daily Chronicle, a London newspaper: ‘After being crippled from early childhood, owing to a diseased hip, Lindley Lodge, aged 26, of Highfield Road, Salisbury, has been cured by prayer. She has cast aside a surgical shoe, a splint, and surgical irons, and now wears ordinary shoes. Miss Lodge has been a patient in Salisbury infirmary about 20 times since she was five years old, and has had a number of operations, yet for the most part she has had to be wheeled in a chair. When last discharged from the infirmary a few months ago she was told that, failing relief of her pain, it would be necessary to amputate the leg. She agreed to this course, but decided to wait until after Christmas. In the meantime, however, a friend communicated with Pastor Fergus Trevor, of Bournemouth, who sent a message that at 3:20 p. m. on a certain day, special prayer would be offered for her. ‘I had heard of a person at Bournemouth being cured of curvature of the spine by prayer’, she told a Chronicle reporter, ‘and just before three o’clock that day I went into my room, took off my splint and irons, and feeling sure that I should not wear them again, I began to pray. Then something happened – I do not know what – but when I came to myself I could walk around the room. That was at 3:25. I flew downstairs to tell my parents. They were dumbfounded’. Within a week Miss Lodge had discarded her shoe, which had a sole 3,5 inches thick, and has worn shoes one of which had merely an extra layer of leather on the sole. The leg which was previously four inches short is now pratically normal’.
God has graciously honored the ministry of Pastor Stephen Jeffreys, brother of George Jeffreys, in the salvation of souls, and has continually confirmed the Word with signs following. J. W. Adams, an Episcopal minister of Wall, Litchfield, Staffs., writes: ‘While in London I went to Surrey Tabernacle, Walworth, and though at first somewhat prejudiced, I was profoundly impressed that Pastor Jeffreys and his helpers were instruments of the Lord Jesus in healing all manner of sickness. After being given up by doctors and turned away from hospitals, the blind received their sight, the deaf heard, the dumb spoke, cancer was cured, and the lame leaped for joy. Above all, the gospel was preached to rich and poor alike’.
One who attended Stephen Jeffreys’ campaign at Bishop Auckland wrote as follows: ‘There have been as many as 1,500 turned away disappointed after waiting in line two hours before the commencement of the service, who have complained: ‘When we have a bit of gospel we cannot get in to hear it’. There have been some wonderful divine healing cases – the lame walking, the deaf hearing, and all manner of diseases healed in the name of Jesus. A born blind girl, twelve years of age, from Newcastle on Tyne, received her sight, and the first face she saw in the world was the pastor’s. A dear man who had been in an invalid’s carriage and on crutches for seven years, came to the meeting on Friday night and could hardly move on his crutches, an object of pity. The pastor laid hands on him as he sat helpless in the chair. Immediately he came to his feet, and putting his crutches on his shoulder, walked home. This man walked into the meeting on Sunday night, and as soon as he was noticed the whole congregation of 1,000 began clapping their hands as they saw him mount the platform. This man has come every night since, dancing and leaping for joy. Another woman, Monday night, never able to walk from birth, of about forty-five years, was prayed for. As the evangelist laid hands on her she stood and walked, and then in sheer joy sobbed’.
Mr. T. D. Dorling writes: ‘During the month here at Bishop Auckland, over 2,000 souls confessed the Lord as their Saviour, a church being formed which now fills the Eden theatre holding 1,200 people on a Sunday evening’.
‘On September 3, 1927, a campaign commenced at Victoria Hall, Sunderland. The Lord came down in mighty power and testified to His presence in a manner that set the county heaving. Crowds gathered from distant towns, creating a situation which had to be taken in hand by the police. Twice a day thousands of people were divided into queues by mounted and foot police, and when 3,000 had been admitted to the hall, often a larger number remained outside to be dispersed by the police or reformed into queues to wait for the next meeting. Probably never before in England have such services been witnessed in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. So mightily was the Spirit outpoured that at ten p. m. queues were formed, standing or sitting, throughout the whole night till three p. m. the next day, sympathetic hearts ministering to the crowds – some with their sick – throughout the night, supplying hot tea and eatables.
An inspection in the early hours of the morning revealed some stirring examples and deep pathos of human love and sympathy. An aged mother reclining on the flagstone was holding the place for a crippled son, who could not spend the night in the open. A young woman resting on the pavement was ministering throughout the night to her sick husband. Each story told a need and a sacrifice through love. Ambulances, cabs and a variety of vehicles brought the sick and suffering and numbers were immediately raised form stretchers and testified in a practical manner of their healing. Such mighty demonstrations of the power and virtue of Calvary increased the interest, and the crowds, from which the Lord drew an abundant harvest – 3,300 souls passed through the enquiry rooms or confessed the Lord as their Saviour; forming a church so numerous as to create a difficulty to find a place to accommodate them. This work has since spread to Seaham Harbour, where a second church has been formed in a hall holding 1,000.
One who attended the revival meeting held by Stephen Jeffreys in Bury, wrote: ‘We have daily seen wonderful miracles of healing and salvation. Seven blind eyes have been opened, deaf have regained their hearing, the lame have discarded crutches, and the dead in trespasses and sins have been raised to newness of life. One Thursday afternoon two cases of cancer were prayed for and both were healed. One of these two was Mrs. Wall, The Homestead, Woodland Ave., Gorton, Manchester. Mrs. Wall preached in the United Methodist Church the Sunday morning after her healing’.

E C W Boulton, teaching on divine healing.
The passage of time may have
marred this picture of
E C W Boulton at work, but it
has done nothing to cloud his
teaching on divine healing
Divine healing of ten stirs up controversy both inside and outside the
Church – and brings its exponents varied degrees of hostility.
But in the early days of Pentecostalism, before religious tolerance
was widely encouraged, Pastor E C W Boulton stepped out in public
with what he believed to be the full gospel.
we publish an extract from an article
he first wrote for the Elim Evangel of the time.
Jesus’ atonement brought
healing as well as salvation
Lay hold of the whole truth, put your life completely
in the Great Physician’s hands, and trust for a miracle
Sadly, where light on divine
healing has been given in some
quarters, it has been rejected or
suppressed – because such
truth is unpopular and would
incur persecution and opposition.
So now I call believers’
attention to the rich legacy that
the Lord has bequeathed to his
Church, and urge them to enter
into its possession immediately.
Firstly, for the encouragement of
faith, I will show the authority
for divine healing from the Word
of God. Secondly, the purpose
of divine healing. And thirdly, I
will point out briefly some of the
hindrances to divine healing.
1
The authority
for divine healing
The Scriptures clearly teach
divine healing:
Our first and final appeal must
be to the Word of God, and
whatever is not found in it should
immediately be rejected. Surely,
the testimony of God is more
trustworthy than that of man.
It is said of Abram that he
“believed God”, and this is
always the ground of victory. Do
not attempt to interpret the
Word of God by your experience
or the experience of those
around you, but bring your experience
to the light of his truth
and see whether it harmonises
with the revelation contained
therein. If not, seek the cause
and have it remedied without
delay.
As early as Genesis 20:7, we
are introduced to the healing
power of Jehovah, and careful
reading of Jewish history will give
us the picture of a whole nation
kept in divine health through
simple reliance upon the unfailing
and unchanging promises of
God.
Health was included in the
Old Covenant, and God guaranteed
– upon the fulfilment of
certain conditions – to be their
healer. And from Genesis to
Revelation, divine healing is
disclosed as the will of God.
Jesus preached divine healing
when he went to the cross:
The Lord’s precious blood
was the purchase price and his
atoning work was twofold – to
Jesus dealt with the
root of sickness and that
enabled him to deal so
effectively with it in every
form of its manifestation.
redeem from both sin and
sickness. The whole man was
involved in the fall and so, in the
atonement, there is perfect
provision made for spirit, soul,
and body. Divine healing is part
of the atonement and only
unbelief attempts to divorce
that which God has joined
together.
In Isaiah 53:5 we read, “But
he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for
our iniquities; the punishment
that brought us peace was upon
him, and by his wounds we are
healed.”
Here we have the twofold
triumph of the cross – salvation
and healing – obtained by the
outpoured blood of Jesus and
applied by the Holy Spirit, the
Administrator of the New
Covenant.
In Matthew 8:17, we find a
New Testament reference to
the Scripture, and in Isaiah 53
the wording is even more definite
and expressive – “He took
our infirmities and carried our
diseases.”
Now it is obvious that what
happened to sin also happened
to sickness. And there can be no
possible mistake here, because
the two manifestations of the
same power – both Satanic –
were dealt with in the same
way, at the same time, by the
same person, and with the same
result. Hallelujah!
But if Jesus bore my sickness
(and the Word distinctly
declares that he did) what has
become of it? Quite simply, it
has been carried to the grave
and left there, and so I bear it
no more. So why seek to cling
to that from which he will
deliver?
The Lord Jesus preached
divine healing:
Luke 4:18 reads: “The Spirit
of the Lord is upon me, because
he has anointed me to preach
good news to the poor. He has
sent me to proclaim freedom for
the prisoners, and recovery of
sight for the blind, to release the
oppressed, to proclaim the year
of the Lord’s favour.”
And Jesus not only preached
a gospel of divine health himself,
but also made it part of the apostolic
commission (Luke 9:1-6). It
was an offer of health for the
body as well as life for the soul.
The Lord Jesus practised
divine healing:
No one should be so foolish
as to dispute this because it
is an established fact. His was a
minister of healing and it is
unnecessary to list Scriptures to
substantiate this because the
four gospels abound with examples
of his life-giving power. But
one may suffice – just to remove
any lingering doubts.
From Mark 5:26, we gather
that our Lord did not exert his
healing power owing to the lack
of medical men. Where their
skill failed, his ministry was sufficient.
He dealt with the root of
sickness and that enabled him to
deal so effectively with it in every
form of its manifestation. And
having obtained complete victory
over the author of sickness,
he is therefore able to conquer
his works.
The Holy Spirit demonstrates
divine healing:
Acts 10:38 and Romans
8:11 show us that it is the work
of the Holy Ghost to make
actual in the believer’s experience
all that the Lord Jesus
purchased on Calvary. Just as he
makes salvation and sanctification
experiential by faith, so he
works out the healing aspect of
the cross.
In John 14:26 Jesus said:
“But the Counsellor… whom
the Father will send in my name,
will teach you all things and will
remind you of everything I have
said to you.”
Divine healing is one of the
“all” things that the Holy Ghost
teaches and demonstrates in
those who are willing to believe.
So James 5:14-16 is the Lord’s
recipe for all his people who
are attacked by Satan in their
bodies.
Jesus not only preached
a gospel of divine health
himself, but also
made it part of the
apostolic commission.
2
The purpose
of divine healing
That God might be glorified:
However, some may ask the
question, “Is God always glorified
in those who are healed?”
Personally, I have never
known a case of healing which
has not been the means of magnifying
the name of the Lord,
and God is glorified both in
those healed and in those who
witness the healing (Acts 4:21,
Matthew 9:8, Mark 2:12 and
Luke 5:26). Who can behold
the miraculous manifestation of
divine power without being
stirred to magnify the Lord and
give him the glory? So if more
of the supernatural were to
be displayed in the Church
today there would be far less
infidelity.
Still, others may ask, “Does
not sickness patiently borne
glorify God?” Yes, undoubtedly
it does. But how much more
does the deliverance of the
sufferer by the power of God
glorify him?
That the Word of God may
be fulfilled:
In Matthew 8:17 we read:
“This was to fulfil what was
spoken through the prophet
Isaiah.”
Surely, the realised Word of
God should become one of the
greatest of Christian evidences
– proving the validity of the claim
of the Word of God to be
inspired.
That the presence of a living
Christ may be demonstrated
in the midst of a believing
people.
That the works of the devil
may be destroyed:
“The reason the Son of God
appeared was to destroy the
devil’s work” (1 John 3:8).
Here we see Satan and his
Conqueror. Wherever Satan’s
power abounds, the divine
power abounds much more.
Bless the Lord! In John 10:10,
we find the character of the devil
given – that of the destroyer. But
praise God for the One who has
broken the destroyer’s power,
and that is Jesus in whom all
power in heaven and earth is
entrusted, the Son of God in
whom dwells all God’s fullness.
Hallelujah!
3
Hindrances
to divine healing
Sin in the heart:
See Psalm 66:18. There
must be heart-purity, and without
it the Lord will not deliver
from sickness.
Idols in the heart:
See Ezekiel 14:3.
Unbelief:
See Mark 11:23.
Any impurity of motive:
See James 4:3.
Any of these hindrances will
prevent the flow of divine life
and render faith impossible. So
place yourself in the hands of the
Great Physician and quickly you
shall discover that he is able to
do exceedingly abundantly
above all that you have asked
or thought.

George Jeffreys’ remarkable account of how Elim started
we re-publish Elim founder George Jeffreys’ remarkable account
of how the Movement started out in Ireland. Here Jeffreys testifies
to God’s faithfulness as a prophecy is fulfilled
after the prayerful and
determined efforts of just a few committed believers bore fruit.
How Elim ministry in Ireland
began with fulfilled prophecy
Pentecostal trailblazer George Jeffreys visits Ireland
where faith and vision puts Elim on the map
I regard the county town of
Monaghan which is situated
some 50 miles from the city of
Belfast, and which has a mixed
population of Roman Catholics
and Protestants, as being the
birthplace of this work.
In January 1915 I crossed
over from England for the
purpose of conducting a mission
in Monaghan and, during my
stay, a meeting was held in a
Temperance Hotel. There a
number of young businessmen
discussed the question of how
to reach their country with the
full gospel – for spirit, soul, and
body – and to spread the news
of the Pentecostal outpouring of
the Holy Ghost.
They were seekers after
God, and had been convinced
that the baptism of the Holy
Ghost with signs following was
for each of them and for all Christians
who would believe. At this
time, not one in the town had
received the experience, but
they had seen the truth in the
Word, and could well afford to
trust the Author of the Word to
come in his fullness to them.
At this meeting I definitely decided
to accept their invitation to
commence operations for a permanent
work in the country, and
a movement was set in motion
to secure a gospel tent for this
purpose. In June of the same
year, a tent was pitched in the
town and the Lord smiled upon
our effort as we began to walk in
the path we knew God had
mapped out for us. About this
time a dear brother in Belfast had
also been touched by the Lord
regarding a work in Ireland and,
at his invitation, a centre was
opened in the city. The first
meeting was held in his home in
August of the same year, when
the Elim Assembly was formed.
This assembly has since been the
headquarters of the work.
Efforts were put forth by the
brethren concerned to secure
a hall, and one was procured in
a most needy district. It was
opened in the month of October,
when a special mission was
held, in which numbers came to
the foot of the cross and found
that salvation which Christ alone
can give.
I must at this juncture
mention the vision given to the
sister at the commencement –
a sister who up to the present
time has been a most consistent

follower of the Master, and who
has been most faithful to the
Elim work. At the time this vision
was given she knew nothing of
the plans proposed in Monaghan.
The vision consisted of a
large, golden ring out of which
came a dazzling brightness –
brighter than the sun at noonday
– and out of the ring ran
many other rings in all directions.
She prayed to God for the
interpretation, and it was given:
“The large ring is the first Elim
Assembly, and out of it shall
come many other assemblies.”
To her it was no idle dream
in which a vagary or phantom
had passed over the mind,
leaving but little impression. It
was a vision given by God, one
that was stamped indelibly upon
her heart, and which was meant
to be actually fulfilled.
As I write these words my
heart flows out in praise and
thanksgiving to God, for he has
caused it to come to pass! Out
of a mere handful of Christians
– devoted followers of Christ,
who knew something about
praying and thirsting for souls –
have come workers who have
gone forth with the sword of the
Spirit, and with the shield of
faith, who have walked in the
train of his triumph, and who
have reaped the fruit of that
corn of wheat that fell into the
ground and died.
Lives and homes have been
transformed on all hands. The
garment of praise from the
wardrobe of heaven has been
given to many who previously
were garbed in the robe of
sadness and gloom. The oil of
gladness has been poured into
mourners’ hearts, and they have
been filled with joy unspeakable
and full of glory.
At the time of writing, there
are 15 permanent assemblies
and 21 workers who have

entered the regular work of the
ministry since the commencement.
Three of the young men
who met at that first meeting in
Monaghan are now in this work
of the Lord. To God be all the
praise! The glorious gospel has
and is being proclaimed, and the
signs follow.
Such blessed results have not
been given without the willingness
to suffer, without the determination
to stand firm against all
opposition, and without being
called upon to pass through testing
times – financial and otherwise.
Yet in all tests and trials our
God has proved himself to be all sufficient.
No salary is paid to any
pastor or evangelist. Each one
has to trust God individually. The
only tie that binds is the one of
love and unity in the gospel of
Jesus Christ.
Not long after the work
started it became necessary to
form a council, and in this again
most loyal and practical friends
consented to take responsibility.
Please pray that the good news
may spread still further, and that
those who carry the message
may be kept walking in the light.
To God be all the glory, and to
God be all the praise!
Blessed results have not
been given without the
determination to stand
firm against all opposition.

leaving but little impression. It
was a vision given by God, one
that was stamped indelibly upon
her heart, and which was meant
to be actually fulfilled.
As I write these words my
heart flows out in praise and
thanksgiving to God, for he has
caused it to come to pass! Out
of a mere handful of Christians
– devoted followers of Christ,
who knew something about
praying and thirsting for souls –
have come workers who have
gone forth with the sword of the
Spirit, and with the shield of
faith, who have walked in the
train of his triumph, and who
have reaped the fruit of that
corn of wheat that fell into the
ground and died.
Lives and homes have been
transformed on all hands. The
garment of praise from the
wardrobe of heaven has been
given to many who previously
were garbed in the robe of
sadness and gloom. The oil of
gladness has been poured into
mourners’ hearts, and they have
been filled with joy unspeakable
and full of glory.
At the time of writing, there
are 15 permanent assemblies
and 21 workers who have

entered the regular work of the
ministry since the commencement.
Three of the young men
who met at that first meeting in
Monaghan are now in this work
of the Lord. To God be all the
praise! The glorious gospel has
and is being proclaimed, and the
signs follow.
Such blessed results have not
been given without the willingness
to suffer, without the determination
to stand firm against all
opposition, and without being
called upon to pass through testing
times – financial and otherwise.
Yet in all tests and trials our
God has proved himself to be all sufficient.
No salary is paid to any
pastor or evangelist. Each one
has to trust God individually. The
only tie that binds is the one of
love and unity in the gospel of
Jesus Christ.
Not long after the work
started it became necessary to
form a council, and in this again
most loyal and practical friends
consented to take responsibility.
Please pray that the good news
may spread still further, and that
those who carry the message
may be kept walking in the light.
To God be all the glory, and to
God be all the praise!
Blessed results have not
been given without the
determination to stand
firm against all opposition.

A woman healed in 1927 at one of George Jeffreys’ campaigns
Elim historian Des Cartwright recounts the fascinating event of
a woman healed in 1927 at one of George Jeffreys’ campaigns
To God be the Glory!
In June 1958 I bought a secondhand
copy of a book that had
been published 30 years earlier.
Written by ECW Boulton
(1884–1959), it was entitled
‘George Jeffreys: A Ministry of
the Miraculous’ and told the history
of the founding and growth
of what became known as the
Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance.
The main focus of the book was
the ministry of George Jeffreys
(1889–1963), founder and leader
of the Movement, told in words,
pictures and press cuttings.
In the following years, I tried
to obtain the autographs of those
people whose photographs
adorned the book’s pages.
In addition to those of numerous
ministers, there were also many
photos of people who had been
healed of various illnesses and
diseases during some of the
mighty meetings that were held
during this period.
Among them were two of a
lady called Chrissie Jardine. The
first picture bears the caption,
‘Crippled’; the second, ‘Healed’.
In 1969 I met this lady at the Elim
Conference, and she signed
the book, adding the words,
‘Before and after healed by the
[power] of God. To God be the
Glory. 1927–1969.’
Miss Jardine lived in Southsea.
Prior to attending one of
George Jeffreys’ meetings, she
had been ill for many years.
Specifically, she suffered from
‘sleeping sickness’ (encephalitis),
which caused her to lose the
sight in her left eye and develop
a twisted spine. The medical authorities
were unable to give her
any further help.
When George
Jeffreys held meetings in Southsea
and Portsmouth in September
1927, she was taken there
in a wheelchair. After prayer
she was touched by the power
of God and instantly healed.
The two pictures published
in the book bear testimony to
this. Another book, Robert E
Darragh’s ‘In Defence of His
Word’, published in 1932, also
records this testimony. Recently,
another testimony to this came
in a most unexpected way.
One of our retired ministers
sent me a copy of Miss Jardine’s
testimony on a recording, made
years later when she was an
elderly lady. It transpired that
when she was very ill, her doctor
was exceptionally kind to
her and did all he could to help
her – not only as her physician
but also as a friend. After she
was healed, he came to see her
and offered her a job as nanny
to his children.
On the day that the recording
was made she was waiting
for the doctor’s son to come
and collect her to take her to a
special family occasion. She said
that as a result of her healing,
the doctor had made his own
commitment to Christ. She
had remained in close contact
with the children to the end of
her days.

George Canty reflects
Writer and apologist George Canty has
been a member of Elim for an amazing nine decades, joining
in 1923, when the Movement comprised just four churches
in England. Despite massive changes over the years, George
says the very same passions that shaped the Movement at its
birth still guide our churches today.
George Jeffreys’ campaigns
rocked cities. They
were not church rallies,
but thousands of nonchurch
people drawn by
the signs-attested Gospel.
one year old, the fourth
Elim church in England, met in a
fire-trap of a shabby hall above
a bicycle shop.
Called ‘Elim Hall’ – it was
locally rephrased as ‘eal ’em all’ –
Stephen Jeffreys had introduced
healing to the city in 1922. This
glory-hole was warmed by a
combustion stove and lit by onebulb
electric lights hanging on
long flexes. They would swing
in the rising warm air generated
by the packed congregation – to
us the sign of power generated
by our worship.
We knew so little and were
isolated as a ‘tongues’ cult. But
we were galvanised by tremendous
Bible assurance and pride
of proprietorship: our church,
our Elim, our Gospel.
Tom Barrett had brought
Pentecost to England, invited by
Anglican clergyman Alexander
Boddy. His Sunderland conventions,
held until 1914, sowed
the seed, and small Pentecostal
groups grew up around the
country. I had a mighty Acts 2
experience in 1926, and was
young among those 1,000 or so
first active Pentecostals – maybe
I am the only one left!
Elim’s birth was extraordinary.
With no plan to start a
Movement, George Jeffreys’
Pentecostal converts were not
welcome in churches. Pentecostal
identity rested on Spirit
baptism, attested by speaking
in tongues. George planted assemblies
to care for them, first
in Monaghan in 1915.
A little later, in 1924, men
like Nelson Parr and the Carter
brothers met in Birmingham to
gather existing groups together
in the fellowship of the Assemblies
of God. I sometimes
ministered with them and other
leaders such as Donald Gee, Albert
Missen, Willie Burton, and
James Salter. All now in glory, we
owe them so much!
My mother, just converted
and enthusiastic, press-ganged
me to play the portable Elim
organ in the city slums – Gospel
outreach, the typical first mark of
Pentecostals. Since then, I have
witnessed (and continue to be
part of) Elim’s exciting expansion;
the great campaigns, building
programmes, its Bible college
and its mission fields – including
martyrdom – growth achieved
not by sheep-stealing but as
fruits of evangelism. Today, that
same evangelism and charity
sees Elim in every continent.
We used to say ‘Elim is a
Movement, not a monument’. It
ranks today as a force nationally
and far afield.
I have found it assumed that
Elim’s beginnings were carried
on a wave of general religious
upsurge – that is not so. On
the contrary, evangelical waters
had then never run so low. The
engine of Elim was fired by the
baptism in the Spirit. Campaigns
of the Jeffreys family rocked cities.
Their audiences were not
church rallies, but thousands of
non-church people drawn by
the signs-attested Gospel.
Revival theories then saw
God’s action a three-day-a-week
operation from behind a closed
heaven to be opened only by
our strenuous spiritual effort.
They talk of showers; God talks
of floods. The first intrepid Pentecostal
venturers demonstrated
rains were falling from God’s
wide-open heavens. Christ’s
coming and the Spirit had torn
open the heavens, and they
needed no re-opening.
Pentecost is the greatest
revelation since the Reformation,
the re-discovery of the
Spirit and the Gospel for both
body and soul. Bitterly opposed,
for years, churches were driven
into back streets, mostly small
and under-staffed. But we knew
God was doing a new thing, the
prophesied end-time outpouring
of the Spirit, though then we
seemed poor representatives.
The Second World War was
an enormous second setback
to Elim. Years after hostilities
ceased, Britain lived on rations,
even for bread. Churches that
badly needed repairs could
buy few materials. I spent years
re-establishing churches, their
congregations scattered and
buildings flattened.
But we knew the Word was
true. Evidence is all around us
today. From nothing, Elim had
to begin everything; our printing
press, our Bible college, our
churches.
At my first Elim Conference
in 1937, pastors and
wives met in the minor haIl
of the Clapham church. The
Jeffreys’ campaigns planted
many churches, which had
to be pastored by campaign
converts, often very young.
In Hull, we had a series of
teenage pastors.

Cleansing and power for all churches
The Sovereignty of the Local Church
Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Act 19:8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
Cleansing and power for all churches
The Divine plan for cleansing and empowering local churches is given in Christ’s Charter in Matthew chapter 18 verses 15 to 20
Cleansing through obedience
Matthew 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
18:16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
Power through obedience
Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Mat 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Implicit obedience to the commandments of Christ’s Charter would mean churches freed from malice, guile hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking, which stunt spiritual growth and hinder revival.
What a tragedy it is when local churches are deprived of the Divine plan for cleansing and power!
The Sovereignty of the Local Church
Christ’s charter can only function in a church that assures its members the right to a voice and a vote in the business of the church. It authorises the church to sit in judgement upon members that are charged with wrongdoing, and to excommunicate the unrepentant from the church. Our Lord has not placed this serious responsibility upon the shoulders of the Pastor and Church officers only, but upon the whole church. Pastors and Church officers who have the honour of ruling and guidance in local Churches are themselves subject to the discipline of this charter, as well as being sharers with their fellow-members in its benefits.
The sovereignty of the local church is clearly taught by our Lord in His Charter, and all preachers of the Word are commissioned to make this known to all nations.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Because formal Protestantism has neglected Christ’s Charter for His Churches in Matthew 18: 15 to 20, one of the most powerful promise-texts in the word of God has been surrendered to a false centrally controlled priesthood that has no foundation whatsoever in the New Testament.
An Orderly Church
Christ’s Charter cannot function in a loose disorderly Church. Obedience to its commandment can only be rendered in a properly organised local Church. An up-to-date membership register is therefore essential to determine who has the right to take part in the church business meetings. One way of keeping the membership register up-to-date is to have the names read out, checked, and confirmed by a resolution at a regular Church business meeting.
An up-to-date register will prevent confusion and frustration in a church business meeting by giving the decisive word as to who has the right to be present.
Safeguards for the Local Church
In our country the sovereignty of the local church needs to be protected and safeguarded by:
1 An up-to-date membership register containing the names of the church members.
2 A local church constitution giving the working arrangements of the church.
3 A minute book containing the decisions of the church meetings.
4 A Trust Deed, or a lease, or a contract, to secure the place of worship for the use of the local church.
The system of voting by postal ballot should of course, be above suspicion. Therefore unsigned voting papers enclosed in envelopes containing the names of the voters on the outside should not be addressed to, or be kept in the custody of a person or persons interested in the vote.
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2Corinthians 8:21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
With the above safeguards the local church can protect itself against a dictatorship that might attempt to take control from within, and against the danger of a central totalitarian organisation taking legal control from without. Once men find themselves in positions of authority over pastors, people, finance and property of the churches it calls for great grace to resist the temptation to do evil in order to retain and extend authority.
Those who wilfully run churches without Christ’s Charter incur great risks to themselves and their fellow men. They need not wonder why they are becoming more bound by fetters that only our merciful Heavenly Father can break.
Proverbs 19:21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
Results of obedience
In Christ’s Charter for His Churches the way of humiliation, confession and restitution is seen leading on to a glorious victory. Churches rendering obedience to the commandments of Christ in verses 15 to 17 can invoke His all-powerful name to bind and loosen, with all that is implied in verses 18 to 20 Thus, washed by the water of the Word, they can claim the aid of the supernatural, take the offensive, and break through the Satanic forces that are seeking to destroy Church and Nation.
May Christians of all denominations be impelled to seek the restoration of Christ’s Charter in Mathew 18 to it’s divinely –appointed in all churches throughout our Nation.

A response to Darren Brown on Channel 4 tv uk this week. There are some false faith healers, but George and Stephen were real servants of God!
From A Crusade in Sunderland 1927.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and forever.
Pastor Stephen Jeffreys said the world needed a new revelation of Christ, Whose power was the same today as ever it had been.
That had been demonstrated by the success that had marked the mission he (the Pastor) had conducted at Bishop Auckland, where in the course of five weeks 2,000 persons had been converted and the blind and sick healed of their infirmities. Spiritual blindness was the characteristic of the present age. The signs of the times pointed to the imminent second coming of Christ, Who was preparing a new race for His coming. "We stand on the threshold of a new dispensation," the Pastor said. The present dispensation was closing with the signs and wonders as set out in the Scriptures. That could not be understood unless the new revelation had been received. To be without God was to be without hope. Salvation through Jesus Christ made men and women new
"No matter how religious you are," he declared, "you must be made anew. Jesus did not come to give religion. He said I am come to give you life. .... Put your religion in the waste paper basket if you are not saved and go in for eternal life. There are some people who go to services to hear what kind of grammar the preacher has, to know how much eloquence he has. Well, thank God, I have more grace than grammar, more grace than Greek."
Pastor Jeffreys takes a gloomy view of the state of the world. The world is getting worse, he thinks, it is getting into the condition which Jesus said it would be in when He would come, and the Pastor says he can expect Jesus to come at any moment.
An address was given by the Rev. J. Adams, Vicar of Wall, Staffordshire, who described how he had benefited by divine healing under Pastor Jeffreys. Divine healing had put 30 years on to his life.
The Vicar described, too, how when Pastor Jeffreys laid hands on him he also restored vision to a little girl's eye. One eye was missing, the socket was empty. After Pastor Jeffreys and his helpers had laid hands on her she had a brand new eye which matched the other one, and she was able to see with it.
A woman who stated that she had been deaf for 47 years announced her ability to hear, and a girl who was said to have been unable to walk for several years, was able to leave her invalid bed and walk off the platform without assistance.
Another patient stated that she had regained the use of her right hand that had been useless for years because of rheumatism. Scenes of remarkable enthusiasm were witnessed.
One woman, who had a little blind girl with her, was very insistent that the girl should be treated, and though the Pastor had finished his work for the afternoon he took the mother and child into an ante-room and there laid his hands on the girl, whose sight was stated to have been immediately restored.
Marvellous secrets were being revealed to those who to-day followed Christ, said Pastor Jeffreys. He believed the greatest tribulation the world had ever known was coming. God was calling His Church to get ready, to separate herself from the world.
He had received a Divine command, and was fighting time by running up and down the country warning people that the Master might come at any moment. He might be preaching there and suddenly hundreds of seats might be emptied, the people being "caught up" to their Lord.
The world was waiting for a leader, a strong leader, to lead the masses. The world had rejected Christ, and Anti-Christ was coming. The world would get its leader. Would they have him? Yes! Christ would also come and lead his people, and take His Church out of this world into a place of safety. Then He would come back to set up His kingdom.
The laying-on of hands by the Pastor, assisted by the Rev. J. Adams (Vicar of Wall, Staffs), followed. A woman paralyzed for 18 years declared herself cured. A blind woman received her sight, a young girl was reported cured of paralysis in the left arm and leg, a woman was healed of paralysis in the hands, while cases of deafness and various minor ailments were treated in quick succession, all patients declaring themselves healed.
When asked to explain how such results are brought about, the Pastor replied, "I only believe the Word of God. I never say I can heal anyone, but I say the Word of God stands. It is His Word that is taken, not mine. I take him at His word. I know I have been baptised with the Holy Ghost, and that is the outfit for preaching the Gospel and healing the sick — the baptism of the Holy Ghost, according to the Word of God."
When it was pointed out to the Pastor that he seemed alone in being able to exercise a special gift of healing, he replied that there were many others throughout the world doing the same thing. "Some of us are more prominent than others," he said, but he also pointed out that not all the Apostles of Christ were equally well equipped to perform miracles.
"Do you regard these as miracles, then," he was asked. "I do regard them as miracles," he answered. "There is healing by faith and healing by faith recorded in the Word of God."
"You explain it purely on Gospel lines?"
"Yes," replied Pastor Jeffreys, and referred his interviewer to Mark XVI., which says, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name they will cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
"It is not animal magnetism or hypnotism which causes the cures," he was asked. "I don't know anything about those things at all," replied the Pastor. "I only know the Lord Jesus Christ equipped me with power to preach the Gospel. I remember His word and expect Him to fulfil it, and He does it."
In an address based on the parable of the Prodigal Son, Pastor Jeffreys said the spirit of the age was loose and lawless; disobedience to parents was ruining the homes of the land, and impurity, intemperence and gambling were eating into the vitals of the youth of the nation. As one who had seen the dangers of young life he warned them of the terrible consequences, and that unless God took hold of them and gave them a new heart they would end on the scrap heap of humanity.
The Pastor, who was received with a remarkable demonstration of popular favour, said there was no human cure for sin. Reformation might be tried by joining a church or trying to make the best of life, but only the way of salvation as declared by Jesus Christ could give a change of heart. While he appreciated the work of the churches, the need of England to-day was for prophets of God to bring conviction to the people of their necessity for a spiritual revelation which would bring the power of God to bear upon the life of the nation. If the young people who had accepted salvation in the revival campaign he was conducting were to witness boldly for Christ their influence would have wonderful results.
We have been greatly concerned during the last year to read and watch disturbing reports of false acts of divine healings and miracles. May I stress that what you will read on my website about the Jeffrey brothers and their associate pastors is genuine. I will go into more detail about this in the future. Meanwhile the following website will help to expose some of the people who are doing great harm to the work of Christ and making some doubt some of what I know to be true on this website.

There are still some genuine Servants of God around today, but beware of false men and women. Use God’s Word and the Power of the Holy Spirit to guide you!
Helen are you out there?
I received the following comment when I first started the Website, I have only just stated to explore the comments. Sorry for not replying sooner!
Helen (Australia) if you are out there, thank you for sharing this lovely comment. I hope you don’t mind me sharing your wonderful story. My great great uncle George has no doubt met again with your father and discussed those wonderful days, as they now enjoy the lovely presence of our Lord in heaven. I have digitally re-mastered some of the old 78’s you can log on to

To hear George Jeffreys.
I have just come across this site, and read some of it with much interest. My father was saved in a George Jeffreys meeting in Canning Town 1925. He worked on the docks, and went to the pub after work for his usual drink. However, this particular night he found he could not get his glass to his mouth! He tried, and became rather embarrassed about this, and so left and walked to the hall where these meetings were taking place. His wife had recently become a Christian and she and some friends were meeting regularly to pray for his salvation.....he had been giving her a very hard time. He slipped into the back of the hall just as George announced his text - Isa 1:18. For the first time he heard the gospel, and was miraculously saved. I always remember him saying, "at five minutes to eight, on a Friday night 1925, John Debling passed from death into life"!! he was full on for the Lord - open airs and everything else that was happening - he had a very bright personality, a gift of singing and was soon leading the worship before the main part of the service started - this was in the Royal Albert Hall at the conventions....also for other great meetings with Smith Wigglesworth, Aimee Semple McPherson and others. Sadly, his wife died in 1936, and later he felt the call of God to go to Australia, which he did in 1938. He was an evangelist for the Foursquare church here, and later pastored churches. He remarried, and I am the only child of that marriage. I loved to hear him talk of 'those early days'.....he had some old 78 Elim records, which I still have. He returned to UK in '65 and preached at many of the churches - both Elim and AOG. His church before migrating to Australia was Barking.

The young man was awed and overcome, he turned to Edward and said "Brother I can't take this work on; it's far too big." When he informed his father, he said "Well , Eddie you must come here for three weeks until I can find a suitable man." As he arrived to start his own ministry that first night it was in great weakness, his knees literally trembled. His text was 'When they came to a place called Calvary, there they crucified Him.' To his great amazement 250 stood in response to receive Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Soon they had purchased their own building called the 'Bethel Temple'.
In May he set up a tent in the Bootle area, they sought no help locally, had little financial help, they distributed a few leaflets and put a couple of small ads in papers.
In 1948 he was appointed minister of a church in North East London, then in 1953 he was appointed minister at another church a few miles away. His ministry as an Evangelist came into play once more and when he retired 12 years later he left a thriving church and work. In 1965 he moved to Bournemouth and died there in 1974.
I don’t believe that I have shared this story before, forgive me if have.

Healing Rays (1932) [Paperback]
Healing Rays by George Jeffreys' is a superb book on biblical healing - in Jesus' Mighty Name which was written in 1932 - when the author had been in Christian ministry for 17 years and had seen tens of thousands of conversions and thousands of healings in his Revival and Healing Campaigns across Britain.
The book is split into 12 chapters over 210 pages and covers nearly everything you may need to know about Christian healing in the name of Jesus Christ. The why, how to, why sickness, what can we do, medicine, attitude, spiritual state etc. and why not everyone gets healed including Christian suffering.
Jeffreys covers the subject of healing from a Scriptural perspective and writes with authority having seen the blind see, the death hear, the dumb hear, cancers shrivel up, the lame to dance etc. etc. and filled halls across the country week in week out.
The author also quotes from quite a few other sources proving that God's power in healing through his surrendered servants has never ceased.
There is a great chapter which is a question and answer chapter full of Scriptural and logical responses. The author also quotes from men such as John Wesley, George Fox, Evan Roberts and other revivalists as well as missionary statesmen such as A. B. Simpson and others who were healed.

Stephen Jeffreys was a great British evangelist and older brother to the eloquent George Jeffreys. Converted during the Welsh Revival, Stephen began his ministry at Cwmtwrch near Swansea. A further visit in December extended to a seven-week mission reaping 130 converts from the small village. Thus began a dramatic ministry as a full-time itinerant evangelist which reaped thousands of souls and was confirmed by signs and wonders wherever he went.
Scores of young men caught the heavenly breeze and began to pioneer new works for God during this time of visitation. Outstanding miracles of healing occurred and a constant flow of converts were won to Christ. "One of the most far-reaching effects of his ministry was the way he seemed to trigger off so many others to follow suit, and the whole character of the British Pentecostal Movement changed." Donald Gee.
